Natural Science First Grade: Classification of Animals Based on Their Food Diet
As humans we can eat meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and etc. Did you know for animals it is the same? Some eat meat, some eat plants and other animals eat meat and plants! Look at the pictures below and think of the names of the food. Then think if the food is meat or a plant.

Let’s check the answers! Number one is a banana and bananas grow on a tree. So a banana is a plant!
Number two is a crab. A crab is an animal, so a crab is meat!
Number three is steak. Steak comes from a cow. A cow is an animal, so steak is meat!
Number four is mint. Mint grows from the ground, so it is a plant!
Now let’s think...
What is a carnivore? What is a herbivore? What is an omnivore?
Carnivore- Animals that eat other animals. A carnivore meaning ‘meat eater’ gets energy and nutrient requirements from an animal diet. A carnivore that sits at the top of the food chain is an apex predator.
Herbivore- Animals that only eat plants. A herbivore is an animal that gets its energy from eating plants, and only plants. Many herbivores have special digestive systems that let them digest all kinds of plants, including grasses.
Omnivore- Animals that eat both plants and animals. Many omnivores depend on a suitable mix of animal and plant food for long-term good health and reproduction. Omnivores eat plants, but not all kinds of plants. Unlike herbivores, omnivores can’t digest some of the substances in grains or other plants that do not produce fruit. They can eat fruits and vegetables, though. Some of the insect omnivores in this simulation are pollinators, which are very important to the life cycle of some kinds of plants.
Below in the comments please write your name and 1-2 examples of animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Or upload a picture of an animal!
