Third Grade Natural Science
What is Matter?
Matter - anything that takes up space. People, air and water are examples of matter.
MASS and VOLUME
The properties of matter are mass and volume. Mass is the amount of matter that is formed. We can measure mass in grams (g) and kilograms (kg).
Volume is the amount of space that matter occupies. We can measure volume in liters (L).
Pure Substances and Mixtures
The different types of matter are pure substances and mixtures.
A pure substance is made of only one substance. For example, sugar is a pure substance because sugar is made of one thing, sugar.
A mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances. For example, sea water is made of water, salt and another minerals.
States
There are three states of matter. They are solid, liquid, and gas.
If an object is solid the shape and volume do not change.
If an object is a liquid the shape changes to the shape to which contains it.
If an object is a gas it does not have shape or volume
Changes
There are two types of changes matter can experience. They are changes without transformation and changes with transformation - combustion.
Changes without transformation-
Changes with transformation- combustion
